Layer: Local Parks (ID: 2)

Name: Local Parks

Display Field: COUNTY_NAME

Type: Feature Layer

Geometry Type: esriGeometryPolygon

Description: This polygon feature class is an aggregation of information the WI DNR obtained from Wisconsin counties, municipalities, and Regional Planning Commissions, supplemented by data from ESRI Streetmap local parks data, intersected with V4 Statewide Parcels to obtain property owner type codes.State lands and Federal lands are not included in this dataset, and should be displayed using other recommended DNR datasets. For information on recommended GIS data sources at DNR, see https://intranet.dnr.state.wi.us/technology/GIS/data/access/or contact the BTS-GIS Section. This dataset was originally created in 2012 using data largely from counties and Regional Planning Commissions. This data was last updated in April, 2019 using the following sources:Park polygons for several counties have been updated using data submitted by counties to the University of Wisconsin - Madison geospatial data repository, GeoData@Wisconsin: Those counties include Brown ('17), Columbia ('19), Dodge ('18), Door ('19), Dunn ('19), Fond du Lac ('19), Green ('18), Jefferson ('16), Juneau ('16), La Crosse ('16), Ozaukee ('17), Pierce ('17), Polk ('19), Portage ('16), Rock ('17), Saint Croix ('16), Sauk ('19), Trempealeau ('17), Washington ('18), Waukesha ('18), Winnebago ('17), and Wood ('16).Counties that continue to display 2012 data because new data were not available for them include Calumet, Eau Claire, Kenosha, Marathon, Menominee, Milwaukee, Outagamie, Racine, Walworth, Waupaca, and Waushara. Local parks information for those counties will be updated as new data is submitted to GeoData@Wisconsin, or made publicly available another way. This dataset is supplemented by Esri Streetmap Local Parks data for several counties where no other data was available. While these data are rather course and are only of approximately 2009 vintage, they can provide a general picture on a small scale until more current data is submitted to GeoData@Wisconsin, or made publicly available another way. The counties supplemented by Esri data include Adams, Ashland, Barron, Bayfield, Buffalo, Burnett, Chippewa, Clark, Douglas, Florence, Forest, Grant, Green Lake, Iron, Jackson, Kewaunee, Lincoln, Manitowoc, Marinette, Monroe, Oconto, Oneida, Pepin, Price, Richland, Rusk, Sawyer, Shawano, Sheboygan, Vernon, Vilas, and Washburn. The City of Madison was updated using the city parks dataset download from their open data page: https://data-cityofmadison.opendata.arcgis.comon May 29, 2018.Dane County was updated using the county parks dataset downloaded from their open data page https://gis-countyofdane.opendata.arcgis.com/ on April 1, 2019.Counties with no data: Crawford, Iowa, Lafayette, Langlade, Marquette, and Taylor. An AUXCLASS (Property Owner Type) field was added and populated by intersecting polygon centerpoints with the V4 Statewide Parcels feature class, and calculating local park polygons' AUXCLASS to the corresponding parcel's AUXCLASS (auxiliary class of property), only for parcels containing an X* value (tax exempt). From that intersection, all federal and state property (X1 and X2) polygons were deleted. Also deleted were records whose PROP_NAME were like school, academy, college, golf, private, club, or started with saint (or st), and those where both the PROP_NAME and AUXCLASS were null. Finally, a search was performed where AUXCLASS was null and the Property Name was similar to County Park or Municipal Park, and those AUXCLASS values were calculated accordingly based on the name.BTS-GIS plans to revisit GeoData@Wisconsin during the second half of 2019 to check for further updated data, but will update this dataset before that time if new information is discovered.
